Pushpanjali

Pushpanjali is the “offering of flowers with folded hands”. The dancer pays homage to the God, Guru, musicians, and the audience. The piece is used as an invocatory item in a dancer’s Bharathanatyam repertoire. This piece is very special and close to the teacher’s heart as it was composed by her Guru, Smt. Ranganayaki Jayaraman.

Kali Kavithuvam

A Kavithuvam is a devotional hymn sung in praise of a deity. The dancer shows the different aspects of Devi: a compassionate mother and a fierce killer who protects her devotees. It beautifully describes the way Kali removes evil and defends the innocent.

Jathiswaram

Jathiswaram is part of a nritta in a Bharatanatyam recital. It is executed to the tune of a combination of swaras, set to a particular raga and tala. Jathiswaram is a highly entertaining and enlightening dance item that helps in developing rhythmic stability.

Rama Shabdam

A shabdam is a very joyful, poetic dance, and is the first dance that explores the Abhinaya (facial expressions). Through a mixture of simple Korvai (Adavus), the piece will shine a light on the beautiful expressions of the art form.

Jatadhara

Jatadhara is a Sapta Ratna Keerthanam on Lord Shiva. This main piece describes Lord Shiva and his attributes over 6 Charanams. It showcases his immense knowledge of the Shiva Puranas. Several stories associated with Lord Shiva in the epics and other literatures shine through brilliantly.

Vande Vasudevam

This Keerthanam is in praise of Lord Vishnu, where the dancer offers her salutations to Vasudeva. She elaborates on the Lord’s features which resemble a Blue Lotus, how his body is smeared with Sandalwood paste, how his head is adorned by a Gem studded crown, and how his neck has a garland of Mandara flowers.

Karya Karana

This composition on the Sun God describes his power and radiance through simple and evocative lyrics. He is the source of all energy in this Universe. Without sunlight, life cannot be sustained on Earth. A few lines from the Aditya Hridayam have been used to add beauty to this piece.

Thillana

Thillana is a nritta item consisting of beautiful, pure, and graceful dance steps along with a number or alluringly sculpturesque poses and varied patterns of movement. A fast paced and energetic dance where the dancer and Mridangam artists are going back and forth with intricate patterns and footwork to mesmerize the audience. This piece is very special and close to the teacher’s heart as it was composed by her guru, Smt. Ranganayaki Jayaraman.
